South Street Casino |
In 1924, Dr. William Monroe Wells received a building permit to build the South Street Casino. There was rarely organized recreation for young African Americans in Orlando, Florida during this time. The Casino was a place for recreation for African Americans of all ages. Inside the Casino were a basketball court and a skating rink for young adults, but come 8:00pm they had to leave the Casino so the adults may come in for their night's entertainment

Dr. Wells booked bands and other big name entertainers to perform at the South Street Casino. Many famous performers that we know today played at South Street Casino within the Chitlin Circuit. A few examples of these performers are:
- Ray Charles
- B.B. King
- Louis Armstrong
- Guitar Slim
- Bo Diddley

Chitlin' Circuit
|
During the 1800s, African American entertainers were not hired to perform their own acts for white audiences in theatres. There were different venues that did hire African American entertainers throughout this time. This chain of establishments, located through the South, became part of a circuit that was important for black entertainers for one hundred years. The name chitlin referred to a popular menu selection offered at many of the venues

The end of the Casino

In the 1980's, a fire erupted through the South Street Casino. The damage was severe and could not be repaired. The fire led to the final demolition of the South Street Casino in 1987
